Who I aspire to be:

I'm currently pursuing a pre-med degree in Cognitive Science, after which I plan to attend medical school and continue study to establish a career as a cardiac surgeon.

Why I created Gamers Gift:

Thousands of different experiences inspired the creation of Gamers Gift. Some experiences, like my closest friend's cancer diagnosis, left a noticeable impact, but smaller day-to-day experiences with video games opened my eyes to the therapeutic aspect of exploring digital worlds,  something that I wanted to share with other people.

Nicholas Reynolds

Position: Chief Technology Officer

Hometown: Santa Rosa, CA

Who I aspire to be:

Since I was twelve years old, I have known that I want to be a software developer. Recently (in the past couple years) I have experimented with the physical side of computation, so I have annexed the goal of becoming a hardware technician to my list of professional aspirations

Hobbies:

Programming, linguistics, running, and playing guitar / listening to music

Why I joined Gamers Gift:

The great gift with technology, I believe, is the number of people we can reach with it. By only typing characters on a keyboard, a single person can create a medical app which allows patients, without access to a doctor, to get diagnoses and treatment. Similar keystrokes can provide a means of instant communication in the event that all other transmission services cease, or they could create a campaign to sponsor a family so they have food and shelter for the coming winter. Technology, by empowering individuals and communities, connects us globally and is our greatest problem-solving tool. I see a direct parallel in the world of gaming. Video games are one of the most widespread sources of entertainment, and for some, it is the only viable source. For individuals with disabilities or impairment, the virtual world can provide true comfort, confidence, and a way to release psychological tension. I grok this. When my parents were divorcing, the tension in the house was unbearable at times. I felt suppressed, in my actions and my ability to express myself. So, I closed my bedroom door, turned on my old Windows XP desktop and played Minecraft Classic. It was liberating, and for as long as I played, I could almost entirely forget the conflict that was just outside my door. This is the level of relief which I have hoped to help others experience, and I see many additional opportunities for the use of virtual reality to enrich the lives of everyone. Thus, when I first read the inspiration behind Gamers Gift, it powerfully resonated with me and I knew that I had to apply. Joining Gamers Gift was one of the best decisions I have made, and working with such an enthusiastic group of people is a true gift!

Gamers Gift is different than usual community service clubs. It focuses on promoting Mental well-being of hospitalized patients, a societal issue often unaddressed or missed by the community. Moreover, it also incorporates Technology! This is the magical X factor which drew me towards joining this club. Ever since I entered UC Davis, I have been wandering from club to club, looking for an ideal place to have fun while gaining meaningful and life-changing experiences. This club offers it all. In nutshell, this organization provides an affable gaming community along with several volunteering opportunities to enrich lives of others.

April "Kayuri" Lat

Position: Director of Digitial Outreach

Hometown: Fremont, CA

Who I aspire to be:

I originally wanted to be a neurosurgeon at my family's hospital when I was like 5, but now I'm 22 and getting my Masters in Public Policy and Human Development. I hope to eventually work as an Officer at the United Nations and do cool things like end world hunger and reduce income inequality.

Hobbies:

My hobbies mainly revolve around composing music, learning languages, and travelling the world. I've been to 12 countries thus far and can't wait to go on even more adventures! When I had more time, I used to play Guild Wars 2 competitively and was the captain of 2 teams: Victorious Secret (get it?) and Une Petite Baguette (don't ask...). Now I just play video games for fun... and charity of course! :)

Why I joined Gamers Gift:

Growing up, I spent a lot of time at my family's hospital and often played with other children in the pediatric ward. Even back then I was a gamer and I remember battling other kids in Pokémon with a good 'ol link cable for Game Boys. It was a lot of fun, and for a while, we could forget that we were even in a hospital. Gamers Gift allows me to share the fun of gaming with others again despite no longer being a kid myself. Although, truthfully I still may act like one from time to time - I swear I have a college degree!
